GameInput problems

I want to add controller support to a simple game I'm working on, so I've been looking for good tutorials for the GameInput API. I have created a bare bones class, with only the an instance of GameInput, but when I set up the listener for DEVICE_ADDED, it fires cotinuously, and with 0 controls on the device it's picking up. I haven't been able to find any mention of the even bugging out like this, so I have a feeling it's something on my end.

Are there supposed to be any particular settings for the gameInput to work? I'm currently using Flex SDK + AIR SDK (4.6.0 + 21.0.0) and the standalone debugger as supplied by AppMan.
