the problem was that the fcsh didn't find msvcr71.dll and the flashdevelop trace don't catch the string error of fcsh
just copied the file inside the bin dir. then .. it worked!!!
hope this would be useful to someone

Correct, you can get it there: http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-f ... ml?msvcr71
and add it to: C:\windows\system32

Do you have Java installed (latest version)? Does mxmlc (in Flex SDK) work from the command line?

I was having this same problem, the flash file was always empty. But I created new empty project and in the project window to the right, i selected Always compile by right clicking the file. Then I clicked Test movie and my flash file wasn't empty anymore! Hopefully this will help you, pcbryant.

Did not worked for me.
Creating and running a new AS3 project I still get :

___________________
Using the Flex Compiler Shell.
Building fooapp
mxmlc -load-config+=obj\fooappConfig.xml -debug=true -incremental=true -benchmark=false -static-link-runtime-shared-libraries=true -o obj\fooapp634432202294649036
INITIALIZING: ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
(... I cut many more question marks lines..)
Starting new compile.
Build succeeded

So here's what I (double) checked without success !!

- removed java and reinstalled 32 bits version of jre 6 update 25 in C:/java
- retrived and intalled last version of Flex sdk (4.1 and 4.5) instead of the one installed by FD
- updated Flex SDK location configuration field accordingly
- checked msvcr71.dll in C:/windows/systems32 and copied it into /programs/flashdevelop/Tools/flexsdk/bin just in case
- edited jvmconfig to fill in field java.home=C:/java/jre6
- disabled firewall just in case
- checked "always compile" in right clicking my main.as
- run FD as admin to be able to access/run all required files

After a whole day, I have no more idea...

:(

If you start a command line prompt (cmd) and type 'java -version' what do you read?

Did you restart your computer after having installed Java?

And from the command line you can run 'mxmlc' from the SDK?

Seems I can't...

I open a command window and moved to:
C:\Program Files\FlashDevelop\Tools\flexsdk

I then run mxmlc and got:

"mxmlc is not recognized as an internal or external command..."

Of course if I move down to \bin, mxmlc runs as it's there.

Does I need to change a path somewhere in FD ?

Actually FD directly uses <sdk>/lib/fcsh.jar

Also which version of FD? Do you have .NET 2.0 (even if you already have 3.5 or 4.0)?

Can you try FD4 dev?
